"Beyond the Spectrum"
Beyond the Spectrum was originally my Black History series from roughly a year ago but when coming into the NYU IMA Program, I knew I wanted to see how far I could push this. I knew my grandparents' stories were important and I wanted to somehow tie them into my collection. Some artistic influences for myself when starting this series were artists like Faith Ringgold, Mickalene Thomas and Kehindey Wiley! Reading Maya Angelou’s “Won't Take Nothing From My Journey Now” and seeing all of the documents my grandfather had relating to his time during the Memphis City Sit In, was all I needed to know that this was the best route to navigate.
